Picture Study with Historical Art

How to bring museum masterworks into your classroom or home.

What Is Picture Study?

Picture study is the practice of spending focused time with a single work of art. Popularized by Charlotte Mason, it develops observation, attention, and aesthetic appreciation. The student looks carefully, describes what they see, and narrates the experience from memory.

Heritage Lab provides the artwork, the historical context, and the guided questions. You provide the quiet attention.

Look

Spend 5-10 minutes studying the artwork in silence. Notice colors, composition, figures, and details.

Describe

Tell back what you see. What is happening in the picture? What catches your eye first?

Discuss

Use the guided questions to explore the historical context, the artist's choices, and the story behind the image.

Connect

How does this artwork connect to what you are studying? What questions does it raise?
